OBITUARY

MRS R. B. PHILLIPPS The death occurred on Wednesday of Mrs Katherine Jane Phillipps, wife of Dr. R. B. Phillipps, of Alpha Street, Cambridge, in her 65th. year. The late Mrs Phillipps was born in Renfrewshire, on the outskirts of Glasgow. Her father was Captain Stewart, a retired regular cavalry officer, and she was the youngest of a family of 13. She was trained as a nurse in Glasgow Infirmary, and was then appointed to Queen Alexandria’s Imperial Military Nursing Service, attached to the Regular Army. She served mainly in home stations, but made one trip to India as a staff nurse in a troopship. On the outbreak of World War I. Mrs Phillipps went to France in August, 1914, with the General Hospital. A hurried retreat had to be made as a result of the hospital being stationed too far forward. A year later, she was made Sister-in-Charge of No, 8 Casualty Clearing Station in Bailleul. It was there that she became engaged to Captain Phillipps who was then on the staff of the clearing station, and she retired from service prior to their marriage in Glasgow on June 2, 1916, during the time Captain Phillipps was on leave.

Just before coming to New Zealand, Dr. Phillipps retired from the Royal Army Medical Corps (Regular Army) owing to ill health due to war service, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. They lived in Christchurch for many years before Dr. Phillipps, who was on the medical staff of the Department of Education was transferred to Auckland. Five years ago they settled in Cambridge. The late Mrs Phillips had not been in good health for a long period and for the past 11 years had been bedridden. She made many friends in Cambridge, and was very appreciative of the kind people who called to see her. She is survived by her hus-

band and one sister and two brothers in Britain.

Mrs Phillipps will be buried tomorrow in the new soldiers’ memorial plot at the Cambridge cemeteiy. The Cambridge Returned Services’ Association is arranging for bearers and the “Last Post” will be sounded.
