Cambridge Harriers Race Prominently

HAMILTON CHAMPIONSHIP

R. GRIGGS WINS JUNIOR TITLE

Although Des. Griggs, of Cambridge, lost the senior title of the Hamilton Harrier Club on Saturday to Keith Trow (a former Cafhbridgeite), there was some compensation in the fact.that his younger brother, Russell Griggs won t\i/ junior championship Two other Cambridge runaers/performed creditably, George Tontsejt being third in the junior event and Lance Griggs fourth for the senior title.

The high standard of distance running in the Waikato at present was shown by the fact that the juniors ran the 3i miles in 22min. 47seq t In winning, R. Griggs finished o\\ solidly to be 50 yards’ clear on the post from H. Maisey, with &• Tornsett third, and Sandos, (he title--holder fourth. For the senior title over six and aquarter miles, there was a field of 16, including three former champions, Crabbe, Trow and Griggs. The latter who is also holder of the Waikato title, apparently decided that if his younger brother could do it, so could he and he jumped smartly into the lead. Trow, having expected something like this, was just as smartly on the leader’s heels. Down the back the pair soon drew out from the field and out into the

country Griggs led by five yards from Trow, with M. Cranston, L. Griggs, J. Sweeney, A. Crabbe and E. Batten following at intervals. There was little change as they raced out of sight and re-appeared. Cranston appeared to be going better at this stage. Trow threw out a feeler to Griggs as they raced down the back the second time, the pair running stride for stride for quite an appreciable distance. The obstacles showed Trow to great advantage and he soon put the all-important 30-yard break on Griggs. When they re-appeared from the hills Trow had 100 yards lead, and sensing victory he let himself go on the flat, finishing full of running 200 yards to the good. D. Griggs was second and M. Cranston third, 150 yards back, followed by L. Griggs, J. Sweeney, E. Batten and A. Crabbe.

The winner’s time was 36min. 32sec.
