The League Season Closes

VISIT OF AUCKLAND TEAMS

ST. JOHN’S BENEFIT DAY During the week-end the curtain was rung down on the first full Rugby League season played in Cambridge for many years and it is to the credit of the code’s supporters, especially a few stalwarts, that considerable progress was made. The Cambridge Club maintained senior and junior teams throughout the season and while they did not finish high in the Waikato competitions, nevertheless they were able—epecially towards the close of the season —to offer solid opposition to their opponents. The Cambridge officials greatly appreciate the wonderful support and encouragement received from the Hamilton district clubs and more.., especially from the Frankton Rovers’ Club. There has bene no dearth of visiting teams —just the reverse. The local club’s officials are to be commended for their enterprise in inviting .Auckland and suburban teams to Cambridge and dur-

ing the past few ( weeks, spectators have been able to witness good league games with these outside teams. Here again the encouragement extended to the local club by outside teams has been particularly noticeable. Encouraging the Boys. Perhaps one of the most commendable aspects of the local club’s activities has been the encouragement of League among the school boys, and in this direction the League officials are working upon the right lines. During the past few weeks school boys’ teams —Schoolboys and Schoolboys (Colts) games have been promoted and here again encouraging support has been forthcoming from Frankton and from Auckland Clubs. Recently the Cambridge boys enjoyed a trip to Otahuhu. St. John’s Benefit Day. Yesterday the local club organised a St. John Ambulance benefit day and a full programme of games was put on at the Leamington Domain. Unfortunately the attendance was not as large as expected, due, no doubt, to the cold, windy conditions that prevailed. The visiting teams included a Marist (Auckland) senior team, Marist

and Mt. Albert sixth grade teams, Richmond (Auckland) Intermediates and Frankton Rovers’ schoolboys. Some of the Auckland teams arrived on Saturday and were entertained by the local club on Saturday evening. The remaining visiting teams arrived yesterday about mid-day. It is obvious from comment made that the Auckland teams enjoy coming to the country, especially the younger lads. They were very pleased with the hospitality extended to them by the local club. The Senior Game.

In the senior feature Marist met a combined Cambridge-Frankton team, but the visitors knew too much about the code for the home side and ran out victors by 34 points to 8. The teams were, Marist: Brockliss; Rangi, Fozer, Guptill; Wilkie, Anderson; Nicholson; Curran, Price, Lyle, Hoeft, Davidson, McLeod; reserves, Harrison and Glover. Combined: Meagher; Apiata, Goosman, J. Beasley; Simkin, Shaw; Katene; Buckley, White, Neweombe, Rattenbury, Beasley, Ripo. The referee was Mr Ces. Moore, of Auckland. The visitors gave a good exhibition and their knowledge of the code, particularly in short-passing and backingup, was too much for the local side. For the visitors tries were scored by Curran, Price, McLeod, Guptill, Davidson, Brockliss, Anderson and Nicholson. Brockliss converted three tries, and Hoeft and Nicholson one each. For Combined J. Beasley scored two tries and W. Beasley kicked a penalty goal.

Other Grade Games.

Cambridge Intermediates gave a fine display to defeat Richmond by 7 points to nil.

Frankton Schoolboys beat Cambridge Schoolboys by 5 points to 3. Marist sixth grade defeated Mt Albert sixth grade by 9 points to 3.

In addition to the foregoing seven-a-side curtain raisers were played by the school boys.
