RACING AT TE AROHA

POVERTY BAY SPRING MEETING CORONAIRE SHOULD DO WELL (By “Old Rowley”) Te Aroha will be the venue of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s SpringMeeting 1 which will be held to-morrow and very fine fields are carded, many of the top flight milers and sprinters claiming engagements, and it will attract the attention of keen sportsmen to see how they run in their first outing of the season. Chief event on the programme is the Makaraka Handicap, of £SOO, run over one mile and three furlongs, which has attracted quite a fair field, and the Electric Handicap, with a stake of £350, is the open sprint. The Waimata Handicap, £3OO, is an open mile race and if all acceptors start it should be a thrilling contest. The first race will start ,at 11.30 a.m., and the system of betting in operation will be win and place. Following is a brief resume of the fields, together with those likely to be favoured -in their engagements. Ilerriesville Hurdles, about Vi miles:

Varuna is by no means overburdened with 10.7, and in finishing fifth last Saturday showed sufficient form to make his chances bright. Ernada is an unknown quantity, and Wildore showed little ability in his last couple of outings. Sir Grant should be improved by his latest run and must be considered if the going is anywhere near normal. Bronzo is capable of a useful effort, while Water Flight, Corsac, which has been schooling impressively, Evening Coat, South Riding, Royce, and Rara Avis should add interest to the contest. However the public are likely to take most interest in Bronzo, Varuna, Rara Avis.

Trial Handicap, six ftirlongs

With a field of 61 and run in three divisions, it is impossible to give a full summary of those engaged, but the most prominent appear to be Whitford Queen, Te Heroine, Bronya, Golden Shar, which is very speedy indeed, Kathshara, Last Sign and Kanga, while Tin Musk, Battledawn, Battle Royal, Royal Silver, Skymaster, Nanakea, Luriri and Beau Martian have also been showing promise. Rajalal, Red King, Royal Scot, and Borderer have also been working well. Among the favoured in their divisions may be: First Division: Golden Shar, Beau Martian, Last Sign. Second Division: Bronya, Stable Boy, Tin Musk. Third Division: Te Heroine, Kathshara, Sky Master.

Junction Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs: Recent place-getters in Sir Leon, Bournemouth, Land Warden and the winner of a trial handicap, Ruling Master, stand out in this race, but others which have raced prominently enough to warrant serious consideration are Brown Atom, Perdition, Old Scot, Miss Caen and Ranada. Baby Girl is fit at present, while Seafire, Greek Boy, Yours and Mine, Horonui, Land Ruler, and Jocelyn Ann. The following are likely to find favour:

First Division: Sir Leon, Silver Treasure, Old Scot. Second Division: Ruling- Master, Bournemouth, Land Warden.

Makaraka Handicap, 1 mile 3 furlongs Lou Rosa might need another race or two before showing his best, and Coronaire looks to be in better form and should show to advantage in this company. Air Port ran a vastly improved race last Saturday at Paeroa and should show to better advantage on the Te Aroha course, on the other hand Hippodrome’s effort was very poor and he will need to handle the Te Archa going better than he did the Paeroa track to have any chance. La Fillette is very fit and is likely to improve on her last outing, while the aged Flying Acre might be the one to surprise, for he is looking very well and after his recent fair efforts might have just that extra little training behind him that makes all the difference at this time of the year. Mr Rosa is an improver with definite prospects, while Gay Lally and Waiting ought to make forward showings. Hunting Loch appeals most of the others. Among the mere favoured may appear: Air Port, Mr Rosa, La Fillette. Juvenile Handicap, 2-year-olds, 5 furlongs By virtue of their placings at the recent Avondale meeting Abbey Pay and Balancer have proved themselves capable, while Diamond Doll is likely to show marked-improvement on her promising finish at the same meeting. However, other youngsters who are looking well are Barwon, Supervision, Yusuf, Tactcal, Glamis Pal, and Mindora. Among the more favoured may appear: Balancer, Diamond Doll, Abbey Pay. Hack Handicap, 1 mile Hunting Loch, Bourne-mouth, Land Warden, and Leigh Hark have prior engagements, but if reserved for this race are worthy of serious consideration. Esmonde is a likely sort and Golden One, which won at Paeroa, should race prominently, while Flying Gold won so well again last week that he looks to have a chance of completing the hat-trick. Romalin, Kerry Lad, Foxstar, Marinoto, Take-a-lot, Horonui, Breczealong, Yours and Mine, and Hayduk are others with prospects. Final summing up may indue in the absence of Hunting Loch: First Division: Leigh Hark, Foxstar, Land Warden. Second Division: Flying Gold, Esmonde, Bournemouth. Electric Handicap, <5 furlongs Exeter, Expanse, Swift Quarry and Nepeta will be having their first outing for some time and it will be interesting to see how these four brilliant thoroughbreds fare. Lord Luck is very forward and Peter Gregor is holding his form well. Theophilus and Black Ace should be capable of sterling efforts and Lord_ Dink is showing plenty of ability. Killeymoon and Kronos appear the best of the others. In a very open race the favoured are likely to include: Theophilus, Killeymoon, Black Ace. Waimata Handicap, 1 mile Swift Quarry would be hard to beat in this race if anywhere near ready, but he must be taken on chance at present. Fortune’s Smile is running fair races, and Colonel Vaals should be suited to the distance. Black Beret is well and looks to be capable of a solid race. White Blaze may need a race to bring her to form, but Chung Chong should be in great heart for such a race. Broiedame is a good miler with prospects and Sir Standfast, Sousa and Bueno are likely lightweights. A trio likely to share favouritism is: Sousa, Chung Chong, Broiedame.

Tyre and Petrol Costs. A resolution supporting the North and South Island Motor Unions in their endeavour to have the cost of tyres and petrol reduced was carried at a meeting - of the Hamilton advisory committee of the Automobile Association (Auckland). It was stated that the action of the unions was supported because it was understood that petrol was approximately one shilling a gallon dearer in New Zealand than in England and also because the price of petrol was reduced in England immediately on the cessation of hostilities in Europe. TJhe committee was also of the opinion that all restrictions on petrol should be immediately abolished.
