POST WAR EXPORTS

VIEWS OF ENGLISH FIRM Following is an extract from a lettejr received recently by the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’ Association from the Skinner Tool Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’ Association from the Skinner Tool Manufacturing Company, Ltd., England, regarding new export markets:— “ Though the war is over, and quantities for the colonies appear ridiculously small, we have still 80 per cent of our output taken up by the British Ministry of Supply which controls all our present production. We are doing our utmost to get. the Government contracts closed and a free hand to export, but with very little success up to now. We are doing" our best to get further allocations for Australia and New Zealand even at the expense of turning down new export markets. We were invited to attend a meeting last week to meetji’epresentatives of the Royal Netherlands Government whose requirements of tools for the Netherlands East Indies assume astronomical figures. “In * collaboration with Stanley Works (Great Britain),” the letter continued, “we refused a firm order for 60,000 ratchet braces for these people on the ground that our own colonies had been denuded of supplies throughout the war and we considered that they should have the first pull on post-war exports. We maintained this attitude in spite of pressure brought to bear by the Ministry of Supply, and in consequence the order will be placed in the United States of America.

“ We bring this to your notice to reassure you that we fully intend to re-establish our pre-war connections in our own colonies and see that they receive adequate supplies before we contemplate developing any fresh ground. We trust that you on your part will press, for further and larger allocaaions in the near future.”
