CAUGHT IN THE ACT

THEFTS OF SHIRTS & SINGLETS FROM LOCAL SHOP While Constable C. 0. Hooker was making enquiries about a person who was alleged to be selling shirts in the town and who had boasted that he could get plenty more at any time he wanted them this “salesman” evidently did not choose the opportune time to secure further supplies of his stocks of “sales.” In fact, he was caught in the act of removing a bundle of clothing from Calvert’s shop and was apprehended by Mr ,T. Brett, a member of the staff. Little did James Francis Loftus, an employee and resident of Karapiro hydro, realise that his movements were being checked in the town by Constable Hooker, otherwise he probably would have chosen another time to replenish his wares, instead of this fateful hour for him. He later appeared before Messrs A. H. Nicoll and R. S. Entwistle, J.P.’s. in the Cambridge Court, last week and was charged with removing a bundle of clothes from outside Messrs Calvert and Co.’s shop and was convicted and fined £5 and ordered to make restitution. The clothing consisted of six shirts and five singlets valued at 13s.
