WHAT THE PEOPLE

ARE SAYING

(By “Citizen”)

[The opinions expressed in this column are not necessarily those of the ‘‘lndependent.” They can be replied to through our correspondence column.] “Citizen” is pleased to note that matters in connection with the establishment of a Maori Hostel are proceeding so favourably. 1 With all the leaders, both Pakeha and Maori, taking an interest; with his Worship The Mayor (Mr W. Moore) leading the Council and with our M.P. (Mr Goosman) being asked to approach Parliament, the erection of the hostel is only a matter of time. “Citizen” hopes that the last winter during which the Maori people will have no plact? to go for shelter has already passed. * * * # * “Citizen” has derived a little, mild amusement from the indignation displayed at the advice from the Government that they did not propose to build houses in Learnington, because they had no applications for houses in that locality, and many applications for houses in Cambridge. Why anyone should be indignant because the Government does not intend to build houses where they are not wanted, is be yond the writer’s comprehension. While the Government retains the ownership of some of the best building sites in the borough of Cambridge, it seems most unlikely that they will cross the bridge in order to build houses where no one has applied for them. “Citizen” again expresses the hope that the Borqugh Council will draw the attention of the Housing Department to all the land lying idle in Fort Street. A very large number could be built on the frontage surrounding the Drill Hall, and as previously pointed out many more could be placed on the police land in Fort Street. * * * *( * While these notes are being written the text of the new water agreement between Cambridge Borough Council and Leamington Town Board is not available. The agreement although adopted by Leamington, and described as “very satisfactory” has not yet been before the Cambridge Borough Council. “Citizen” hopes that Cambridge residents •who pay for the supply and whose properties are mortgaged to secure the supply, will be equally satisfied. “Citizen” wonders who is the party who have authority from the .Cambridge Borough Council to prepare an agreement that Leamington can adopt before the matter comes before the Cambridge Borough Council. sj: * * * * Could not the Council do spmething to improve the surroundings of the new ’bus terminal? Passengers who leave the ’bus at this spot cannot form a favourable impression of Cambridge. Still worse must be tne last impression of our town left on intending passengers who have spent some time waiting for the ’bus at this terminal. First and last impressions are important, and in this case they have a cash value to Cambridge. “Citizen hopes that something will be done at once to improve this position.
