BOROUGH AFFAIRS

COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING Long agendas and late hours are the order at the Borough Council meetings at present, indicating that the committees have been busy. The Works Committee now meets, on a separate night so as to be able to give full consideration to the many matters it has in hand and the Finance Committee is likely to do likewise. A full council were: The Mayor (Mr W. Moore), Crs. S. Lewis, T. Cummings, T. H. Boyce, A. N. Willis, M. Wells, W. R. Garrard, H. E. Aymes, T. H. Hampshire and the Town Clerk (Mr F. T. Ray). The Cambridge Junior Red Cross were granted permission to hold a street day on Saturday. Mr W. Munroe wrote complaining that the trees in frint of his premises in lower Victoria Street, especially a big plane tree were responsible for damage to the building. He stated thta he was just as much a lover of trees as anyone else and was not asking that the trees be removed, but that certain topping and trimming up be done.—Left in the hands of Crs. Cummings and Willis. The United Football Club were granted use of Victoria Square during the summer months for athletics. The Mayor said that Mr F. Solly and his club were doing good work in keeping the boys in healthy athletic training. It was agreed that the Council have the running track mowed and rolled for the club. William D. Taylor, a Returned .Soldier from the Middle East, asked the Council to support his application to the Transport Licensing Authority for a taxi license.

The Mayor said he considered there was plenty of room in Cambridge for another taxi. In Taylor there was the example of a Returned man endeavouring to rehabilitate himself.

It was agreed that the application be supported. The Red Cross Society wrote advising that two blankets and a rug, used by the E.P.S., which were borrowed private property, were missing. The writers suggested to the Council that the articles be replaced.

After discussion it was decided not to accept any responsibility, but that the matter be referred to the Controller of the Medical Section of the E.P.S. for further investigation.

The Town Clerk was authorised to attend the Town Clerks’ Conference at Wellington on October 31, Mr Lewis voting against the motion. Mr .1. Linsley, of Grey Street, wrote complaining of danger to his residence through the possibility of fire from the gorse-infested sections adjoining. The chairman of the Works Committee (Mr S. Lewis) said he was in complete sympathy with Mr Linsley. The sections were in a deplorable state with gorse 10 feet high adjoining Mr Linsley’s residence.

It was agreed that as this section

(030) was in such a state the Borough Solicitor be asked to arrange with the owner for an immediate improvement of the section or that it be put on the market for sale.

J. A. Doyle also wrote re a nearby section (470). lie had entered into possession of section 471 and was clearing same. He was also prepared to take over 470 —an absen-

tee-owned section. Mr Lewis said, this section was also in a deplorable state and heavily burdened with long arrears of rates. The Borough Solicitor is to be asked to expedite matters under the Bating Act. The Council's seal was affixed to

an agreement with Messrs Matos and Segedcn giving the Council the right in perpetuity to take gravel from a new pit on Carter’s Flat.
