GENERAL NEWS

A Local Tongue-Twister.— During the hearing of evidence by a witness on Tuesday at the Cambridge Court the following tonguetwister came out: “He was in his shirt sleeves, shepherding the accused out.” Even the Prosecutor, and the Clerk had to say it fairly slowly to get over it.

Check Up On Spring.— An enthusiastic Palmerston North gardener has for the past three years kept a record of the date on which several early blooming trees have commenced to flower. This shows that spring this year is about two weeks earlier than last year, but about equal with the spring of 1942. Cambridge gardeners, what do you think about it?

Houses for Families.— “People leasing houses ought to provide some means whereby if there are many children the rent is cheaper,” said Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court, Wanganui. Some time ago, he had leased a house and included a provision that if the people had a child he would reduce the rent by £lO a year. It would not be a bad idea to put in a few of these in leases, instead of the more usual one that the house would not be let if the people had children. Children were an asset to the country, and he had a great deal of admiration for the man with a large family.

Dairy Herd Decline. —It was reported last week that two small Southland dairy factories had closed down because of falling supplies and increased costs. According to a statement made by the president of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union, the position was much understated. “Already six factories in Southland had ceased operating,” this authority said, “and it appeared that others would soon be in a similar position.” Between 1034 and 1042 the dairy cows of the Southland province declined from 80,1(57 to (50,133. In the same period the province’s sheep figures increased from 2,402,107 to 3,00(5,213.
