WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KARAPIRO DISTRICT r BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

There was a large and happy gathering recently in the Karapiro District Hall to celebrate the Women’s Institute’s eleventh birthday. The president, Mrs Mowat extended a welcome to all visitors. Maungatautari, Kaipaki, Tauwhare, Fencourt and Roto-o-rangi institutes were all represented, and the Cambridge branch of the Women’s Division. The gathering stood to sing “Comrades and Friends.” A competition arranged by Mrs Iveeley proved interesting and amusing, Mrs Andrick being the winner, Miss Gwen Warner gave a recitation. Mesdames Milburn and Cooper a duet, in costume. A delicious luncheon was then served and at the conclusion the ceremony of lighting the candles of the birthday cake was quite a feature . Mrs Mowat called upon Mrs Fletcher, past president, to light the first candle, then upon other members and upon visiting presidents. The visitors also took this opportunity of wishing the institute many happy returns and presenting Mrs Mowat with floral tributes. More delightful items were then rendered by the following: Songs, by Mrs R. Currie, Mrs Maitland and Miss C. Harvey. A humorous reading by Mrs Cooper. Mrs Mowat presented all those who contributed to the programme with a floral spray and thanked them. During the afternoon another competition was held, Mrs Keeley again doing all the arranging and it was greatly enjoyed by all present. Tauwhare team proving the winners. On behalf pf the visitors Mrs A. Goodwin thanked Mrs Mowat and the Karapiro Institute for the very enjoyable time the visitors had all had. All joined in the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” and the National Anthem closed the party.
