RESTRICTIONS

ON RAIL SERVICES

EXPRESS TRAINS DELETED

The imposition of rail travel restrictions in the North Island will mean a reduction of passenger runs to about one-half after midnight on Sunday and a reduction of goods traffic by about 40 per cent. The limited express between Auckland and Wellington will cease running. The 3 p.m. express to Wellington will run as usual, every day except Sunday. There will be no New Plymouth express and passengers to Taranaki will transfer from the Main Trunk line at Marton. A special rail-car service will operate from there to New Plymouth. Trains to and from Opua and Rotorua will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Taneatua express will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Permits for travel over 50 miles will be required by all civilian travellers, with the exception of annual or season ticket-holders, members of the Legislature and holders of tourist excursion or block travel vouchers issued before yesterday. Members of the forces on leave or returned soldiers on four-weekly or threemonthly furlough passes will be allowed to t'-avel without permits. Only in the latter case may the servicemen travel with their wives or families.

New Reservations Required

All reservations, regardless of distance, will be cancelled. This is necessary because of the deletion of trains for which reservations have already been made. Passengers on ■all trains will require to make new applications for reservations, which in case? of travel over 50 miles, will have to be supported by permits. Permits will bo issued at all stations where there is a stationmaster as torn 9 a.m. to-day. Goods traffic is confined to shipping cargo connections, perishables, and goods for urgent delivery. These include such commodities as military equipment and stores, materials for defence construction, lime and manures, seeds and agricultural machinery consigned direct to fanners. Livestock other than animals for slaughter will not be carried!
