FARM COTTAGES

NO FURTHER ORDERS UNION REPRESENTATIVES No further order will now be accepted by the Government for farm workers’ temporary accommodation, according to a letter from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, read at a meeting of the North Taranaki provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union in New Plymouth. Orders at present in hand will be completed. This information was given in reply to representations 'made by the executive for speedier output ot temporary cottages on farms. At a previous meeting the president, Mill. E. Blyde, urged that, in order to relieve labour problems, measures to increase cottages be taken, and at this month’s meeting it was decided again to make representations.

“It is felt,”, said Mr Armstrong, “that the scheme has fulfilled its purpose by meeting temporarily the acute shortage of farm cottages brought about by the drive for increased production and that greater advantage should now be taken of the facilities available for. financing the erection of a more permanent class of dwelling under the provisions of the Rural Housing Act.

In a brief disscusion it wa,s considered that the Rural Housing Act did not meet the position and a motion that further action he taken was carried unanimously.
