WEDNESDAY > August 13 — The great Cologne power station at Quadrath and Knapsack were attacked in the largest daylight raid on Germany. Twelve Blenheims and eight fighters were lost. •. * * Admiral Darlan, French VicePremier and Foreign Minister, had his powers extended by the Vichy Cabinet. * * * German reports stated that the Russian port of Odessa had been isolated by, Nazi forces which had reached the Black Sea coast. 'THURSDAY August 14— For the first time in history the British Prime Minister and the President of the United States! held a conference at sea. The* supply problems of the British! Government and also the Soviel Union were discussed. Post-wa4| terms were considered also. # ‘' # *

The Soviet commander in the Ukraine, Budenny, succeeded in avoiding encirclement by tpe German thrust, at the same time enabling 160,000 men to defend Odessa.

Neutral reports indicated that Cologne was almost unrecognisable as a result of R.A.F. night raids.

An international crisis of great magnitude was predicted in France, as a result of Darlan’s betrayal.
