CRICKET

SUCCESSFUL SEASON CLOSES SOME SPLENDID AVERAGES The playing of the Waitemata Cup match .last. week-end, brought the 1939-40 cricket season officially to a close in Cambridge. l Although several matches were" ; marred by :rain, the season was in many ways; ■ a very successful one for the Cam- ! bridge Association. 1 - ; Many strong teams' had been opposed to local ; elevens in representative fixtures, and the successes attained by Cambridge in these "matches, added to the splendid records of both competition teams, was doubly pleasing. Of infinitely greater value, however, to cricket and Cambridge generally, was the local association's good fortune in receiving visits from teams of such splendid cricketers and sportsmen as the Waitemata, Y.M.C.A. and Middlemore Clubs, of Auckland, and many other clubs from near and fair. The fact that all these sides expressed a keen desire to make their visits annual fixtures is indeed stimulating for Cambridge players and supporters. The marked advance in the standard of cricket locally has been largely due to the continuance of these matches, and the friendships created by them are greatly valued by all followers of the game./ Season's Averages ! \ Batting and bowling averages of players in the A and B teams for competition matches are given below. The bowling honours go to T. Chard, with the fine total of 51 wickets, while L. Crawshaw has bowled consistently well throughout the season for his 33 wickets to finish second. M. Bright, who played for Hamilton East in the Senior A competition, are also given. Bright has proved himself to be one of the outstanding players in the Waikafo.
