MEETING AT PUKEKOHE Cambridge horses performed well at the Franklin Racing Club's meeting at Pukekohe on Saturday, gaining two firsts and one second. Messrs A. W. and R. H. Townsend's Wildore gained a decisive victory in the Waiuku Hack Handicap, beating Beeswing and Vitemint. For the same owners, Orwere ran second in the Pukekohe Handicap, being a neck behind Yalimeen, with Penzance third. Having his second start. Mr W. Townsend's Chain Acre won the Tuakau Stakes with ease to pay over a quarter of a century. He is a two-year-old full brother to TrigStation.
Substitutes for Petrol "The matter of distilling shale in the South Island is at present the subject of an official inquiry on behalf of the Government," said the Oil Fuel Controller (Mr. G. L. Laurenson), commenting on a letter to the Christchurch Press. The letter discussed the production of 'shale oil, petrol-saving devices, and the use of substitutes for petrol. Mr. Laurenson also stated that a technical committee was at the moment making a thorough inquiry into all matters associated with producer gas equipment in New Zealand. Mr. Laurenson concluded by saying that the Government was making every inquiry regarding the use of alternative fuels to conserve motor spirit, and inventors of devices which have this object in view should communicate with him.
