CENTENNIAL CULTURE

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LECTURES TO BE GIVEN The Auckland University will take an important part in. Centennial celebrations, according to the Centennial News. The programme includes: (1) A series of lectures open to the public on the history and problems of the Maori race. (2) A course of public lectures on. early New Zealand from 1800 to 1840, dealing with conditions of life in the early pioneer period. (3) A Centennial open day at the college, with lectures and laboratory demonstrations. (4) In collaboration with other educational bodies, an exhibition illustrating the development of edu-

cation in Auckland during the past hundred years. (5) The annual exhibition of the School of Architecture in 1940 to have special reference to the Centennial and to be one of the Centennial exhibitions of the city. (6) The publication of material from the Felton Mathew diaries, relating to the experiences and historical records of the first Sur-veyor-r General and his wife. These diaries were a subject of special research by Professor J. Rutherford, who visited England last year. (7) A volume of essays by members of the staff under the title “1840 and Now.” The aim is to describe the European, culture which formed the background of the early settlers and to compare this with the culture of today. The work .will be edited by Professor W. A. Sewell, with sections relating to education, medicine, architecture, political ideas and institutions, science, and other departments of knowledge.
