TAX-FREE TROOPS

POSITION IN AUSTRALIA MILITARY PAY AND ALLOWANCES Australian fighting men on active service will be relieved of Commonwealth and State taxation of their pay and allowances, the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, announced after a meeting of the Premiers recently. The conference unanimously agreed to adopt the following principles : Exemption from taxation should be made in the case of soldiers or airmen who go overseas and seagoing personnel of the naval forces. The exemption is to operate in respect to military pay and allowances and not on income from other sources. It will apply to all ranks. Mr Menzies said that, if any Government found that legislation was necessary to. give effect to the decision, steps would be taken to legislate.

This, together with cellulose made from straw, will be used to augment Germany’s dwindling supply of textile thread.
