Night Bowling Postponed.—Several challenge matches were to have been played on the Cambridge Bowling Club’s night green on Tuesday, but rain, caused games to be postponed until this evening.

Treaty of Waitangi. —One hundred years after the actual event, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi at the Bay of Islands was reenacted on Tuesday on the same ground, and in the presence of a great gathering of over 10,000 Europeans and Maoris.

Petrol in Australia. —Although there are no petrol restrictions in Australia, the price has recently been raised, and an Australian newspaper cutting credits the Chamber of Automobile Industries with the estimate that petrol sales have declined by about 20 per cent.

“Worst in Dominion.” —“So far as carriage accommodation is concerned I should say the TaranakiWellington service is the worst express service in the Dominion,’ said a prominent New Plymouth business man when discussing the prospect of having to travel more by rail in the future in consequence of the re-imposition of the petrol restrictions and the necessary restriction of the use of motor-cars.

Oyster Season Again.—The oyster season will again, open on February 15 this year, according to Invercargill fish merchants. Last year the Government decided that the season be opened on February 15, instead of February 1 as in former years, following a recommendation by the Sea Fisheries Commission.

Trout on Shark Hook —Fishing at the head of Lake Te Auau, in the Clinton River, an Australian fisherman, who used a. shark hook baited with fat bacon on the end of a length of loose cord, recently hooked a Gib rainbow trout. The line and hook held, but the mouth of the trout did not.

Swimming Starts to Pistol. —The new system of starting by pistol has been introduced in Christchurch swimming this season, and has had a marked effect in stopping competitors from “beating the starter.” The sound of the pistol has noticeably started some of the women swimmers, and men too, with a “start,” especially in. the Tepid Bath, where the small pistol used makes a very healthy bang. Actually special ammunition is used for an indoor start, but even so the detonation is loud.
