DEFINITELY DEFERRED

NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL ADVICE FROM DEPARTMENT Definite information that a new primary School would not be erected in Cambridge in the near future was received at last night's meeting of the school committee, when a communication from the Education Department was read, which stated that in view of the present situation and the large capital expenditure contemplated, the replacement would be deferred in the meantime. "We have had warnings of this, and there appears that there is nothing that *\ve can do in the meantime," said the chairman, Mr W. R. Garrard.

Mr H. Burge reported that the primary school had been painted in a satisfactory manner. One board had deteriorated so much that it was not worth while painting. 'However, enough paint was left to cover a new board when it was nailed into place. It was decided, that the old flooring boards from the primary school be cut up and used for firing in the coming winter months. Regret was expressed by the visiting committee that Standard 2 class room had not been refloored, as it was probably the worst in the school. It was stated that the floor of Standard 6 room needed reinforcing, and the teachers' common room required to be painted. The grounds were in good order, with the exception of the assembly area at the back of the primary department. A request to carry out improvements is to be placed before the Education Board. In reply to an earlier letter, the. Education. Board wrote stating that the request for interior painting at the primary school had been placed on the list for consideration when the next list of such works to be advertised, was being prepared. The board stated further that the architect had been authorised to arrange for a swivel blackboard and mats for the infant department. A grant of £7 was made for the extension of the library at the secondary school. In connection with the appointment of a new headmaster, the committee decided to urge the board to a man whose age is such that the extra work and travelling occasioned by the primary and secondary schools being so distant from each other, would not affect his health, and would be conducive to the best supervision of the school as a whole. The chairman, Mr W. R. Garrard, presided, and also present were Mrs P. Craig, Messrs H. E. Amyes, C. G. Wallace, W. Moore, H. J. Nelson, H. Burge, L. A. Potts, T. Cummings and W. Barton (acting-headmaster).
