EARLY SETTLERS

CAMBRIDGE PIONEERS OF 1864-1875. LIST OF NEARLY 400 NAMES Some month's ago a start was made to collect the names and other details of the earliest settlers of the Cambridge district. The list of those pioneers and their sons and daughters, who were born or arrived in Cambridge not later than 1875 has been steadily growing, untill well on towards 400 names have been recorded. These will be published as a special appendix to the book "Such Things Were," in which the early history of the Cambridge district has been, set down. Painstaking Research While quite a lot of information has been supplied by members of various pioneering families still living in the district, many of the names on the list have been the result of much painstaking research. A fair proportion of those recorded are of early settlers who either have no living descendants, or whose sons and daughters have left the district. ** Fortunately research has revealed lists of the early pioneers, both of the town and country. The earliest of these historic records is the complete roll of soldiers of the 3rd Waikato Regiment to whom town sections were allotted when Cambridge was first surveyed in 1864. The greater number on this list did not remain in the district, after the Maori War. They scattered to all points of the compass in search of further adventure, or were attracted to the goldfields. Of this list, only those who are known to have settled in Cambridge for a period of years have been included. Sources of Information Another valuable source of information was a list of foundation members of the Loyal Duke of Cambridge Lodge which was started in Cambridge in. 1867. The names of the settlers of the Pukerimu district who contributed to the building of the first school in that district in 1876, and a list of the original scholars, has also been drawn upon. The original communion roll of Trinity Presbyterian Church, which was founded in 1873, has proved a valuable source of information. Information regarding the existence of similar lists between 1864 and 1875 would be of great assistance to the compiler of this record, in making it as complete as possible. The files of "The Waikato Independent" for the past thirty-five years were also searched for details of the pioneers. Much biographical information was found in "The Cyclopedia of New Zealand (Vol. 2, Auckland)." This has been used where applicable. Each of the district cemeteries — Hautapu, Leamington, Pukerimu and Tamahere—has been searched for information regarding the founders of Cambridge, and the dates of their birth and death. List Cl'oses Next Week The printing of "Such Things Were" is now practically complete, and an early date has been fixed for publication of the special clothbound edition. It is necessary, therefore, to close the pioneers' list at the end of next week—September Oth. In. a compilation involving so much time and labour a few errors are unavoidable. We wish to make the list as accurate and complete as possible in the time available. For this reason we wkmld specially ask thbse who may detect any discrepancies lin dates or in the Spelling of names, or any omissions, to get into touch with "TThe Independent" Office without delay. It is interesting to note that more than sixty of the original settlers of 1864 have been traced. It is hoped that still more names of this and later years will be forthcoming before the final closing of the list. 1864. Arnold, John (1919) Arnold, Mrs John (1922) Booth, Benjamin B.
