RATE FIXATION

DESIRABLE FOR CARRIERS LICENSING AUTHORITY'S VIEW i Stressing the desirability of some form of rate fixation among carriers, Mr E. J. Phelan, No. 1 Licensing Authority, at a meeting of the Authority in Pukekohe, stated that this was working quite well in other places. "We have got to protect three paries—the user, the operator and the general public," said Mr Phelan. "The third party, the general public, is more important than anyone. It is only a matter of time before we will have rate fixation here." It was only when all efforts on the part of interested bodies had failed in regard to rate fixation that the authority would step in, he added. This was a very big problem, and had been for the last three years. The authority felt, however, that a decision must be made. Should any anomaly crop up then, the authority was prepared to reciew the matter, and with this in view, he did not see why the thing shosld not be workable for all parties.
