POSITION IN CAMBRIDGE

Statement by the Mayor MANY OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE The Mayor of Cambridge, Mr Edgar James, received many enquiries, and offers of assistance yesterday. He has made the following statement to the citizens of the district: "Notwithstanding the valiant efforts of the Motherland to avert war, the inevitable has happened; and it therefore behoves all citizens to face the situation calmly. "I have not the slightest doubt that all steps to organise as may be deemed necessary will meet with a ready response from the citizens of Cambridge and nearby districts. In this connection it would be unwise to embark upon any proposal until definite instructions are received from Wellington. "I desire, however, to thank sincerely, all those people and organisations who have already come forward with offers of assistance. Their services will be required, and will be used and embodied in the general scheme which will take concrete form in the very near future. "I feel sure that it is the earnest wish of the Government that all commercial and social activities be continued as usual. In the opinion of the local Centennial Committee the Queen Carnival campaign should proceed as planned, and with such an organisation already functioning the committee could divert the funds to an approved patriotic object, should the necessity arise. "I have pleasure in announcing my. acceptance of the offer from St. Peter's Catholic Coronation Committee, to hand over the net proceeds from Wednesday's Coronation function as the nucleus of a local patriotic fund. In view of this generous offer, I would appeal to the public to give this function wholehearted support."
