HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES

POSITION OF FARMERS COUNTY OPPOSES ENFORCEMENT The question whether fanners carrying their own goods should pay heavy traffic fees was discussed at a meeting of the Waikato County Council, when a request was received from the Gordonlon. branch of the Farmers’ Union asking that the regulation be not enforced. It was pointed out that neighbouring county councils were not enforcing the regulation. Mr R. G. Young moved that the council’s traffic inspector be instructed not to enforce the regulation.

The chairman, Mr J. A. Sampson, said the council had already passed a resolution that the regulation be enforced. That resolution would have to be rescinded. In reply to a question, the clerk, Mr C. F. E. Barton, said the Transport Department had intimated that if the counties were opposed to the enforcement of the regulation the department’s inspectors would, take no action.

The Chairman: If the department is showing weakness like that then the sooner it comes into the open and either enforces or withdraws the regulation- the better. The position revealed is a most unsatisfactory state of affairs. Mr Young said he had informed farmers that if they came into Hamilton, where the regulation was enforced, they would do so at their own risk. Notice of motion to rescind the previous motion was given by Mr Young.
