High-class Hunters at Cambridge Show

SECOND DAY RESULTS

D’ARTAGNAN the champion show a financial success While the £202 in gate takings at the Waikato Central Agricultural Association’s 35th annual Show at Cambridge on Friday and Satuida\ were £2 less than last year, it is estimated that the attendance was larger. The competitors were more numerous than in 1937, while the steady increase in membership resulted in more privileges being extended to patrons. The financial result will be satisfactory. The main interests in the show on Saturday were the huntingevents and the grand parade of all stock. The Waikato is recognised as the home of hunters in New Zealand, and this was borne out by the large entries of well-bred animals. It was noticeable that the standard of jumping improved as the day progressed, this being largely due to. the fact that many of the hunters had competed earlier in the month at Morrinsville and Matamata, where the fences were much easier. The hunting course at the Cambridge Show is regarded as one of the most difficult in the Auckland Province, and a true test is set for competitors. Twenty-three horses competed tor, tile honour of champion hunter, the* award going to J. Wilson’s D Artagnan, which gave a polished exhibition of jumping. D’Artagnan was tb# outstanding performer at the show, also gaining first awards in the light-weight hunter, wire jump, nnd cleverest hunter classes. The local veteran, Mr H. E. Porritt’s Ginger Mick won the champion hack ribbon, while Mr J. McSweeney’s Whenua gained the reserve championship. The announcement of results by a\ public address system kept specta-\ tors informed of the results, while the Cambridge Municipal Band enlivened proceedings with popular items. , .. A display of trick riding by the Russian Cossacks added to the variety of the afternoon, while the side-shows were well patronised. Saturday was a busy day for competitors, stewards and judges, but excellent organisation enabled the . events to be decided without delays. This was Mr Harold Crowther’s first show as president, although he carried out similar duties last year owing to the illness of the late Mr J. S. Fisher. He proved himself a Worthy head of one of the most important institutions in the Cambridge district. , PONTS PRIZES^ •Shorthorns (Fisher Bros.’ Cup): <G. D.
