POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS
ALTERATIONS IN GRADING MINISTER'S ANNOUNCEMENT A number of important decisions concerning the grading of postprimary schools and free places in these schools were revealed by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, in an interview. Usually the grading of secondary, technical and combined schools, secondary departments, district high schools and intermediate schools and departments is determined by roll numbers on March 1, but this year March 15 will be substituted for the usual date, except in the case of opening later than March 1, these being graded 14 days after the respective opening dates. In the case of the grading of schools affected adversely through pupils finding positions owing to delay in the opening of such schools no general relaxation of staffing regulations will be made, each case being considered on its merits.
It has been decided to continue the concessions that have been granted to fee-paying pupils in all types of Government post-primary schools. Approval has also been given of the extension of junior free places for an additional year in the case of those pupils who failed to secure senior free places in 1936, also of the extension of senior free places beyond the end of the year in which the holders attain the age of 19 years, provided that in both cases the parents are unable to provide the necessary fees for the tuition of a child after the expiry of the free place.
