SCHOOLS REOPEN

COMMENCING ON MONDAY TEN WEEKS' HOLIDAY ENDS After enjoying nearly a month's extra holiday on account of the restrictions imposed by it the Health Department during.the epidemic of infantile paralysis, school children will commence their year's work on Monday. The Cambridge Primary School and District High School and St. Peter's Preparatory School have been enrolling new pupils this week and a minimum of delay is expected in settling down to the year's studies.

At the Cambridge Primary School, the headmaster, Mr J. G. Catran, reported yesterday that little difficulty is expected in getting into regular routine. School teachers have been back at work this week preparing the year's programme. Schedules; have been arranged and schemes of work have been drawn up. At the conclusion of the last term in 1936, there were 373 pupils on the roll at the primary department, but 42 of these will not be returning this year. Thus, even though a larger number of new pupils than usual are enrolled by Monday it is not expected that the total will exceed last year's figure. More pupils arc expected as the term advances.

Effect of Late Start

"There should be no difference by the end of the year," stated Mr Catran, when questioned concerning the late start being made. He said that most schools finished their work well within the allotted time and there was little doubt that all arrears would be caught up. Mr Catran thought that the senior pupils of the secondary department might be slightly affected, but it was probable that the date of the Matriculation examination would, be a week later than usual. He had been asked to approve or disapprove of an extension of the date and had replied favouring an extension.

A point raised by Mr Catran that may affect the end-of-year results was the probability of the May holidays being extended from 14 to 19 days, owing to the Coronation of King George VI: If this occurred all plans would be considerably disorganised.

The school grounds are in good order to commence the year, the assembly area and paths at the secondary department being considerably improved as a result of tarring and sanding by the Public Works Department.

Primary Staff

The staff at the primary school to commence the year is as follows: Headmaster: Mr J. G. Catran. Infant Mistress: Miss K. Woulfe. Primer II: Miss C. Wallis. Primer 111 and IV: Miss V. M. Patterson. Standard 1 and Lower Standard 2: Miss iL. D; Crouch (relieving). Upper Standard <2 and Standard 3: Mi s E. M. Anderson. Standard 4: Mr J. T. Paul. Standard 5: Mr T. F. KerrStandard 6: Mr W. A. McKenzie. Heavy Holiday Traffic Heavy traffic is anticipated by the Railways Department and other transport organisations this weekend, when the great majority of children will be returning to their homes in readiness for school on Monday. Many parents had refrained from taking their children away from their homes until well into January this year on account of the iniantiie paralysis. As a result, much of the school holiday traffic was late in starting and there have been numbers of children travelling during the past few weeks.

District Schools

The various schools in the district will all resume on Monday. At Leamington, it is expected that the roll will be much the same as last year. The Cambridge Kindergarten will re-open in the Old Parish Hall oh'Monday. '
