COMMERCIAL COURSE

AT CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL ADVANTAGE TO PUPILS Parents of children starting out on a course of secondary school instruction are reminded that the secondary department of the Cambridge District High School now has on its curriculum the full commercial course of book-keeping, shorthand and typing. - This course was in full swing prior to 1932, but owing to necessary retrenchment at that time the commercial teacher was removed from the staff and children requiring commercial instruction were permitted to attend secondary schools in Hamilton for this purpose. With better times this commercial course has been recommenced and full commercial instruction can once more be received at the local High School. Parents should note, moreover, that with the advent of a commercial coui'se in Cambridge free tuition in these subjects at Hamilton is now discontinued. Cambridge pupils are not allow r ed by regulations to receive free tuition at an outside centre in subjects catered for by their local secondary school, except where such pupils enrolled at an outside school prior to the introduction of the course in the local school. In view of the excellent results gained by the local secondary department in Matriculation (nine passes out of 10 candidates) and in Senior Free Place (24 passes out of 24), it is pleasing to see the local school’s curriculum being on a more extended basis to include commercial work.

In the past academic instruction has been of a very high standard of excellence as proved by the above results, and it. is to be hoped that parents will give the local school every support on the commercial side and so enable this branch of the work to reach the high standard already attained on the academic side. The teaching staff comprise Mr J. G. Catran, headmaster; Mr F. S. Merrick, 8.A.; Mr H. N. Freeman, 8.A.; Miss D. M. Brown, 8.A., and Mrs G. Watson (Commercial instructress). The teaching .staft’,resumed duties this week, and intending pupils are advised that they may enrol this afternoon or Friday.
