RAILWAY CONCESSIONS

(To the Editor). Sir, —It is with pleasure that we read how the Labour Government is cleaning up some of the unnecessary expenditure of this country, but it is to be hoped that before they are finished they will abolish the issue of free Railway passes which are quite unjustified, and are issued to people who could quite easily pay their way. Of course, I am not referring to school children, but to those who attend these annual conferences to get their annual leave of absence, so as they can enjoy a holiday at the expense of the public, whereas otherwise annual conferences would be of no interest to them, and more capable men might get a look-in. Yours, etc., NO CONCESSIONS.

According to the Railways Tariff Regulations, “delegates travelling to attend annual meetings of religious bodies and friendly societies, and such other annual meetings or conferences as may be approved by the Railways Board, and the wives and children of such, delegates when accompanying the delegates, may be granted first-class tickets, available for return for one month from date of commencement of the ticket in each case, at special excursion fares, on production of a certificate signed by the secretary of the conference.”
