LYCEUM CLUB I i • BRIDGE AFTERNOON A very large bridge afternoon was held at the Lyceum Club rooms in Hamilton on Tuesday, when each member brought outside guests. The Lounge was attractively decorated with bowls of japonica and spring flowers. Wattam, 11. Bashford, E. Burns, L. Beangc. OLD COUPLE’S ROMANCE The marriage of Mr William Proctor Hoavcll, aged 01, and Mrs Christina Lawson, aged 73, took place at Ashburton on Tuesday. Mr Hoavcll lived in Dunedin in 1557 and Avorked there and at Oamnru and on the Central Otago goldfields' for many years. Mrs LaAvson’s husband and tAVO sons, one aged .10 and the other 13, were drowned in a Avfeclc near Auckland. A SURPRISE PARTY Miss Valerie Catran received, a great surprise on Saturday night, when a party of her school friends arrived at her home to celebrate her seventeenth birthday. During the evening many jolly games were played, and at midnight the young folks enjoyed a very dainty supper.* Although it Avas a very wet, cold night a cheerful fire kept the | party merry and bright. Mrs J. G. Catran was Avearing a charming frock of black georgette, and a black embossed georgette bridge coat. Miss Valerie Catran wore a gown of midnight blue satin and white plush cape. Others present were: * Miss Lois Amyos, shell pink taffeta and plush coatee; Miss Joan Ross, pink floral georgette and black velvet cape; Miss Nancy Moore, white floral ninon and floral coatee; Miss Joan Webber, shrimp pink satin; Miss Joan Lees, white flat crepe and black coatee; Miss Vera Crawford, black satin embroidered with red poppies. The boys present were: Douglas Calvert, Gordon Easter, Teddy Richardson, Bob Pearce, Maurice Weathcrcll, Clive Boyce, Buster Wilkins.
