an enjoyable PICNIC MAUNGATAUTARI No. 2 SCHOOL (From Our Own Correspondent) The* Maungatauturi No. 2 School held its annual picnic on Friday in tlie ideal surroundings of native bush on Mr J. M. Scott’s property. There was a large gathering of a'l the child'.on and their parents and friends. The day was fine and not too warm ici sports. Games were enjoyed before and alter lunch. During the afternoon the prizes .were distributed by the chairman, Mr C. La Trobe, ass.stcd by the headmaster, Mr Bird. TAOTAOROA SCHOOL Another most enjoyable annual picnic was also held on Friday, when the children of the Taotaoroa School an 4 their parents motored to the Crystal Springs, Matamata. Swimming, games, ami sports events made up a delightful day’s programme. A full report of the picnic will appear in Thursday’s issue of The Independent. KAIPAKI AFFAIRS WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly ■ meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Thursday last, when Mrs Graham presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the repetition of the. Creed and the Institute Song, after which the business part <‘i the meeting was dealt with. Remits for the next Hamilton Conference were read and discussed. Mrs A. Goodwin was elected to attend as delegate. Nominations wore received for a new committee for the ensuing year. The roll call, “Have you tried.” was very interesting and helpful. The competition “An article in Arts or Crafts” was won by Mrs T. McCarthy, with Airs W. Cunningham second. Madam Burtyl, of Hamilton, very kindly gave an excellent talk on dressmaking, and demonstrated the cutting out of a lady’s dress, a child’s dress, and a princess petticoat, for which a hearty vote of thanks was given.

Little Aliss Burtyl also very pleasingly gave two elocutionary items. The trading table was in charge of Mesdamc-s A. Good and AV. Cunningham. The meeting closed with a dainty afternoon tea, served by tno hostesses, the Misses 0. Kite, D. Frew and M. Bovd. Cricket Match A cricket match which aroused considerable interest and drew many spectators was played on the Ivaipaki cricket ground on Saturday, when the AVaipa Country Association’s reps met and defeated the Otorohanga reps. AVaipa scored 13S, the main contributors being G. Bninbridge 58, A. Boyd 10, T. Ganiev 16 and B. Bcecho 15. Otorohanga replied with .113, A. Stamp being top 'scorer with 18. AAA Ganiev. G. Bninbridge and .T. Tarr wore successful with the ball.
