BOWLING NOTES

EASTER TOTJENAMENT ACCOMMODATING TEAMS (By "Toucher.") Already considerable interest is being taken iu the Cambridge BowlingClub's annual Easter tournament, and Mr Wooldridgc reports that entries are coining in daily. Though. Easter is not until late in April, there should be no inconvenience owing' to the extension of Summer-time. Last year about a dozen teams could not be accommodated at the tournament and it is quite likely that there will be too nmny x entries again this year. Fortunately those who had to lie rejected last year realised the importance of early entry and are already accepted for the coming fixture. While it is to be regretted that teams have to be turned away, there is no doubt that this is a good advertisement for the popularity of Cambridge and the tourney. As the. tournament poster states, "Entries close on .March 28 or when the tournament is full" and intending competitors know now that it is no use waiting until the last minute to enter. While this position exists there will never be any doubt as to the success of the Cambridge Bowling Club's Easter tournament.' The Leamington Club has kindly offered the use of its green should extra accommodation be required and though it is too late to accept, this year it is probable that should' the offer be repeated next year the Cambridge Club will not find it advantageous to accept. There is no doubt that the Leamington green is playing excellently and the conditions and surroundings are ideal,. but the Cambridge Club treats its tournament as a business fixture and must pay due regard to finance. A feature of the tournament has always been the social atmosphere which exists with all the players on one ground and meeting one another each day. The tournament is the right size at present, and "Toucher" feels sure there would be disappointment if the visiting players found that the old regime had been altered. Again, while there are too many entries one year the success or the tournament is assured for the next. Competition Notes Competitions are again in full swing after the holidays, and it should not be long before several are finalised. The championship singles has reached an interesting stage. H. N. Freeman reduced M- MeNamara to an equal footwith the remaining players, last Friday evening, and C. H. Cooper was eliminated on Tuesday evening by E. C. Wallis. This leaves Freeman, MeNamara, Wallis and A. Pcaree to fight it out. The Coltman Cup has drawn a large entry, but on the one-life system should not take long to complete. The current rounds of the McCathie Memorial and President's Pairs will close definitely on February 0. An Altered Tune P. T. Harrison, "Boomerang," in the Sydney Referee, who visited Auckland for the Dominion tournament, was somewhat unpopular owing to his criticisms on the green and in his paper. However, he has shown a different side in the following short article: Australian bowlers, and. others who. bowl not, here is a picture that must, metaphorically speaking, make your mouths water. The New Zealand postal authorities place telephones in houses and charge a. nominal'fee. You can use the instrument, till the cows come home; there is no charge. For those in the street one penny is asked. Taxi-cabs will take you to Timbuctoo and anywhere else too for, about eighteenpence. I was allotted, a boardinghouse, and the price ;jave me a bit of a scare —2.*5/- a weekj—but have a peep at this: Hot and cold baths ami showers at your bedroom door, all day and night. Beautiful outlook, Rangitoto in ihe distance, and lovely views of harbour, etc. The fare amazing—too amazing for words, and equal to the best dinner served at the big hotels—penny tram section from the railway. Who wants to return to Sydney? No shouting on the greens, afternoon tea and biscuits threepence; daylight saving and play till nine!
