BOWLING NOTES

COMPETITIONS COMMENCED THE CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES

(By “Toucher.”)

.Tho Cambridge Bowling Club is now under way with its competitions, and the draw for tho first round of the championship singles is as follows: W. E. Westlake v. R. White; H. E. Ainyes v. M. McNamara; A. Richardson v. A. Finch; F. M. Oliver v. G. .Tames; E. C. Wallis v. A. Pearce; W. R. Garrard v. A. H. Nicoll; T Dix v. F. R. Wooldridge; H. N. Freeman v. T. H. Hampshire; T. Boyce v. W. R. Edwards; D. .T. Lundon v. Dr Tod; C. H. Cooper v. C. W. Hooker; C. Zainey v. E. Martyn. The first round must be completed by Saturday, December 1. Playing as usual under the two-life system this competition should be completed during the month of February. At a meeting of the executive on Tuesday night the problem of competition matches interfering with friendly evening games was discussed. As the policy of the club is to provide sport for every member at all times the greens are open, the matter calls for some thought. In previous years there have been occasions when every rink was occupied with singles and pairs matches and members desiring an evening roll-up have had to wait an hour or more before a rink was free.

Several suggestions have been made; to relieve the position, including the reducing of the number of heads in the pairs matches and eliminating one of the singles competitions. However, it is quite likely that the introduction of night bowling this season wifi provide the solution and tho executive may decide to leave the matter stand for this

year. The night bowling committee has left nothing undone towards making the opening of the night bowling on Saturday a festive occasion. Apart from the flood-lights, chains of coloured electric, bulbs arc being hung around the green, and as a large atterfdance of members and visitors are expected, a gay. night is anticipated. There will be no charge, but members are asked to bring a basket. ■!' , . The Greens The Nos. 1 and 2 greens continue to play excellently and are in good condition. A slight touch of blight, which is prevalent in the Waikato, is being dealt with immediately and should be checkoff "before any harm is done. ,;A wise policy is being pursued of not cutting the edges of the greens for a distance of six or seven feet, during the. early part of the season, and there should be little signs of wear later on.Of course the Easter tournament is always a severe strain on the grass, but the system adopted last year of transplanting young roots into the baste patches has proved a... •wqndorful; success. Af- present, the caretaker is giving attention to a plot of grass tufts being prepared for next year’s transplanting. v /;&:/ Leamington Holds Shield ' ' The Leamington seleet rink repeated its performance of the previous Saturday, in again successfully defending the Waikato Rinks Shield against a challenge from Claudelands. This Saturday the challengers will be Glen : Massey. .
