The masses were indifferent, although a .percentage was converted. , , Eighteen months' ago' there had been persecutions by the military class and several leading Christians, including women, bundled' into igaol and ordered to recant, revolvers being aimed at their heads. This they refused to do, and later their captors released them. Brigandage Wais rampant and an armed guard was advisable when taking a journey away from a village.
