MATAMATA RETAIN PEACE CUP CAMBRIDGE DEFEATED IN AN EXCITING MATCH Alth.ougli unable to wrest the Peace Cup from Matamata on Saturday, the Cambridge representatives gave a good exhibition of football, the score being Matamata 18, Cambridge 11. The game was full of excitement, with .Cambridge responsible for most of the attacking. The local forwards played a sterling game, but the backs were not showing the same combination and did not handle as well as they have done. Though the game was hard and fast throughout, it was played in a most friendly spirit and the referee had an easy task, compared to the previous Peace Cup match between Morrinsville and Matamata.

Except for a short period after halftime, defence was excellent, but it was this short lapse which cost them U:n points from W. Coulson, and made all the difference to the game. Cambridge were the first to score, but then Matamata rattled on all their 18 points, which was too big a handicap to catch up, though the local team were having the better of matters in the concluding stages of the game. The Game Described Cambridge won the toss and defended the northern goal, and maintained the early advantage. Hewitt failed with a shot at goal and Carlson brought play to midficld with a good kick. Holmes broke away and sent Wilson on to be forced out near the line. Cambridge kept up the attack and Hogan set Holmes going but he knocked on. Matamata relieved with a free for offside play. In Cambridge territory Carroll went away and sent on to Swap who was forced out. Matamata were pressing near the line and Cambridge forced. . Again Matamata worked down but James forced from a long kick. Cambridge hooked i from, the serum , and Hogasa • kicked through for D. Carlson to find the line and the 25. Lowry and McLcay came through and crossed the line but play was brought back. Cambridge took to the attack and Pcake dashed down the line to be lowered on the 25 line. A free to Matamata returned play to Cambridge's 25. Holmes found an opening and came through, but Soloman saved. Cambridge were having the better of the scrums and Hogan ■was seen to advantage. Matamata wero hard pressed when Soloman again kicked well to,the line. W. Carlson broke away and kicked through. James was caught but ran behind and touched down. From a five-yards scrum, Carroll received and was unsuccessful with a shot at goal. Pcake ran up and found touch at the half-way. Swap was caught off-Sido and Hewitt found the line five years from Matamata»s goal. Play was held up while Carswell received attention. A series of lineouts followed, McLcay relieving with a looso rush. Storey and Fitzgerald held the pressure but offside play again gave Cambridge the advantage. The forwards followed up and Beer charged a kick from Soloman and the ball going over the line Harbutt got there in time to touch down. M. Hewitt failed with a difficult kick. Cambridge 3, Matamata 0. An attack by Matamata backs was short lived and play returned to midfield. Bad handling by the black backs spoiled their attacks, but the forwards were bustling hard. Holmes took a mark and relieved a dangerous situation. A shot at goal by Soloman missed. Another free to Cambridge rcturned play to midficld. From the line-out Hewitt kicked through to the 25 line. Play worked in the Cambridge 25 from loose forward rushes. Cambridge relieved temporarily till Carroll broke away and cut though the field to send W. Carlson on to score a good try. W. Carlson converted. Matamata 5, Cambridge 3. Cambridge forwards rattled into Matamata's 25 where a scrum went down. Matamata" backs" went away but sound tackling held them up. A long kick crossed the line and James forced. Carlson broke away, but was solidly brought down by James. Matamata were still attacking when a kick across field waff taken by Pcake, who ran to half-way before being stopped. Second Spell Matamata were the first to attack and .Soloman took an unsuccessful shot at goal. A few minutes later W. Carlson broke through the field and scored an easy try, which he converted. . Matamata 10, Cambridge 3. I Hewitt and Allwood went away

with a rush, but play soon returned to Cambridge territory. Carlson received again and cut out his man and went over under the posts. Again he converted. Matamata 15, Cambridge 3. Spurred on Cambridge went to the attack and Hogan, Hewitt, Allwood, Holmes and Wilson handled. From play on the line Matamata forced. Again Hewitt broke away but was nailed on the line. Cambridge were awarded a free, but Hewitt failed with the kick at goal. Play worked into Cambridge's 25 again and Swap sent D. Carlson over. W. Carlson failed with the kiek. Matamata 18, Cambridge 3. W. Carlson broke away again but W. Wilson came across and nailed him on the line. Hewitt, Beer and Bryant broke through with the ball and carried play to the 25. Holmes picked up and sent Wilson on to score a pretty try in the corner. A good kick by Hewitt just failed. Matamata 18, Cambridge 6. Hewitt, Coulter and Holmes made the pace and play centred in Matamata 's 25 but the ball crossed the dead ball line.- Allwood made an opening and Holmes went away for the line, but could not get over. Play remained in Matamata's territory with Hewitt prominent. Carlson broke through and beat the defence but knocked on and play was held up. Cambridge were bustled when a free gave relief. A forward rush carried play into Matamata's 25. Delaney and McLcay handled in a run down the line, but Cambridge were soon attacking again. An opening was lost through bad handling when Matamata were caught out of position. Hewitt broke away but was not backed up with only the full-

back to beat. Cambridge were having , the better of things and kept Matamata on the defensive. From the loose Hogan picked up and cut through to score a beautiful try beneath the posts. Stewart converted. Matamata 18, f Cambridge 11. f

Again Cambridge came to the attack and Stewart made a good run before kicking on for Bryant to follow up. The ball crossed the line and Matamata forced. Again Cambridge attacked and Matamata had to relieve by forcing. Peake went away with a likely run down the line, but was forced out when a score looked possible, an(J time sounded. For the winners Soloman, W. Carlson

and Swap were the best of the backs, with Storey, McLeay and Simpson, prominent in the forwards. H. Peake, N. Holmes and Hogan in the backs; and Hewitt, Coulter, Beer, Harbutt and Burns in the forwards were outstanding. Mr S. E. Senior, of Hamilton, was the referee.
