HOCKEY AT HAMILTON

KILLIP SHIELD • CAMBRIDGE DEFEATED The conclusion of the opening round of the Waikato Hockey Association’ssenior competition for the Killip Shield was reached on Saturday at Steele Park. Cambridge was defeated after a hard game by Kaipaki. The local team is not playing hockey of the standard produced by Cambridge last year, consequently they are well down the ladder. The results of matches played at Hamilton on Saturday arc: Colts 3 v. Old Boys 3. Old Technicals 5 v. Hinemoa 4. Kaipaki 2 v. Cambridge 1. THE CAMBRIDGE GAME Cambridge swept to the attack by Doel performing well to pen Cowley to a corner, but the movement was shortlived and Kaipaki retaliated. Goodwin intercepted a brisk sallv that yielded results when Burrows followed on tlie ball into the net. D. McKinnon, Bright and Muller showed to advantage in shots destructive to the opposition and Worrying to Smillio, the opposing ’keeper. Cambridge continued on the attack until Burrows, Cowley and Bones broke away, the former managing to get his shot past Williams to register their second goal. In the circle Bright used his head but Smillie just managed to clear. Play was central when the whistle blew for half-time and the board read Kaipaki 2, Cambridge nil. The resumption of play produced brisker hockey, Doel and Kohcly being conspicuous in sound tactics which eventually ended in the latter scoring to open Cambridge’s account. Kehely was again responsible for good work, a goal being in sight, but the defence was sound, forcing play to the centre where time was called, the scores being Kaipaki 2, Cambridge 1. Messrs F. Gracie and F. Craig were the umpires.
