MANY INVENTIONS

THE “ROBOT BARBER” ARRIVES. A naval officer has invented an electric safety razor which works by means of a pocket battery. The battery oscillates the blade and so gives you a nice clean shave. At present you have to hold the razor in your hand. But I have no doubt that it will not he beyond the ingenuity of our inventors to produce something soon that does not require even this drain on human energy. The razor is one of the exhibits at the international Exhibition of Inventions now being held at the Caxton Hall, Westminster. Another new invention is a “sucker” attachment to an electric hair drier which removes loose hairs after a haircut. Those who know the irritating feeling of loose hairs creeping down the neck will appreciate this. Captain G. Drury Coleman, the organiser of the Exhibition, tells me that London has supplied most of the inventions on show. Scotland comes next, but places as far afield as India and South America have also sent in their quota. “A surprisingly large number of women inventors are represented,” Captain Coleman said. “This year they are not confining themselves to thinking up homely devices for saving time in the kitchen or keeping the house clean. “One or two women have turned their attention to wireless and invented gadgets of the most technical kind, demanding expert knowledge.” Here are some of this year’s bright ideas seen at the exhibition: Combination wardrobe-bookcase, sandwich pressing and cutting apparatus that removes crust, six cylinder two-stroke internal combustion engine, thimble with thread-cutter attached.
