WAIKATO REGIMENT

SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY CAMBRIDGE SHOULD PARTICIPATE Steps arc being taken in Hamilton to suitably celebrate the 70th anniversary of the landing of the 4th Waikatos at Hamilton, Avliich falls this year. The Hamilton Borough Council is participating and it is intended to make the celebrations as representative and appropriate as possible. Now, as the Third Waikatos were stationed at Cambridge seventy years ago and another company of the Waikato Regiment at Pirongia (then Alexandra), and as there are many descendants of the Fourth Waikatos in this district, it is felt that something might also be done in Cambridge to suitably mark such an historic anniversary. It is thought that some suitable recognition should be made in Cambridge and perhaps in conjunction with the Hamilton activities. It is suggested that the Mayor be invited to call a meeting of the early settlers and anyone interested to -'iscuss the matter. We have been reliably informed that there are at least fifty descendants of the Fourth Waikato men in this district, apart from the descendants of the Third Waikatos. From memory wc can recall such families as Webber, Hugo, Crawford, Sharp, Cameron, and there are many others. Perhaps the Mayor could associate with Mr J. S. Fisher, president of the Early Settlers’ Association, in calling a meeting. The opportunity to suitably commemorate the early settlement of Cambridge and to add to the history of this old-established centre should not be allowed to pass.
