RUGBY TROPHIES

PRESENTATION AT BALL. THE SEASON’S WINNERS. During the course of the RugbyUnion ’s ball in the Town Hull on Thursday evening last the various competition trophies won during the season were presented to the winners representatives by the patron, Mr F. Lye, M.P. Before proceeding with the presentations the union president, Mr H. Cubis, extended hearty thanks to the public and to all who had again supported Rugby in Cambridge this season. Mr Cubis referred to the reduction of the. clubs to four at the beginning of the season in order to improve the standard of play, and he expressed the opinion that that action had been justified. Mr Cubis expressed appreciation of the sporting attitude of the Tauwhare and Matangi Clubs in freely merging in one club —Northern —and congratulated the club’s executive and players on the splendid performance of winning the senior and junior championships and in holding so far this season the Binnie Cup for champion club teams of the Waikato. The president also spoke in terms of high appreciation of the assistance of the St. John Ambulance Association this season, and referred to the value of the union’s insurance scheme. The Trophy Winners. The patron, Mr Lye, heartily congratulated the various winners on their performance this season, and after thanking the ladies’ committee for their great assistance at this year’s ball, presented the trophies as follows: Rickit Championship Cup and Senion Union Banner: Northern (Mr L. Chitty, captain). Junior Championship Cup and Fitzgerald Shield: Northern (Mr F. Petter, captain). Third Grade Priestley Cup and Union Banner: Leamington (Mr G. Garland, captain).

Bishop-Taylor Senior Soven-a-sido Cup: Northern (Mr L. Chitty-, captain). Union Seven-a-side Junior Cup: Ilautapu (Mr McKee, captain). Binnie Cup: Held by- Northern. The president, in concluding this portion of the evening’s proceedings, exhibited the handsome shield latelypresented by- Mr Jas. Fleming, for competition among all play-ors other than the first fifteen representatives. Mr Cubis said that if tlic Finlay- Cup competition conditions were altered next season the Fleming Shield might become one of th most important of the union’s competitions.
