DOES THE LABOUR PARTY HELP THE WORKER?

The Labour Party in New Zealand claims that it will do away with unemployment, and make the lot of the working man a good deal easier. Mr Holland has stated that he would repeal the wage-reducing legislation, and .was described in a flambuoyant advertisement as 1 ‘ The Man to do away with Unemployment. ' ' The above claims are typical Socialist Labour promises, and the honouring of these may be as typically kept. For example, despite the bold assertion that they had a positive remedy for unemployment, the Labour regime in England saw an increase in the number of unemployed by over 1,000,000. In Australia, Lang and Scullin were responsible for all sorts of extravagant pre-election pledges, yet the Federal Labour Government reduced the basic wage by 10 per cent, and increased the wages tax by 300 per cent. Railwaymen in Bathurst, Australia, voiced their sentiments as follows: “Wq deplore the fact that no genuine effort has been-made by the Government to find employment for.unemployed although the unemployment tax was increased 300 per cent by a Labour Government. ’ ’ 'Electors in New Zealand, particularly the workers, should view Socialist Labour's pleas in the light of cold fact and proven failure, and treat them accordingly at the polls.*
