CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. VALUE OF SWIMMING TUITION. At a meeting of the District High School Committee last night Mr A. N. Macky presided and there were also present, Eev. Jas Hay and Messrs Geo. Calvert, H. Ferguson, J. S. Hooker, W. E. Garrard, V. G. Boulton and H. L. Posscnniskie. During the course of the meeting Mr Ferguson brought up the subject of swimming tuition for the scholars this season. Mr Ferguson referred to the good work that had been done in the past and commended the Swimming Club for the part it had played in fostering swimming among the schoolchildren. He expressed the hope that instruction would again be possible this year, and that the school staff would cooperate. Mr Boulton said he did not know if any provision for instruction had yet been arranged by the Swimming Club. In the past the club had co-operated with the Borough Council. The salary of the instructor had been met by the council, with tho assistance of the club and fees from the children participating. Ho strongly supported the views expressed by Mr Ferguson on the value or. the instruction, and quoted examples of pupils of the school having gained New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association certificates up to one mile. Mr Boulton said he had always advocated that swimming should be a recognised subject on the school curriculum.

The chairman and other members endorsed the previous speakers' remarks and hoped that swimming instruction would be available again this season.

After a little further discussion it was unanimously resolved that Messrs Posscnniskie and Boulton wait on the Swimming Club committee at its next meeting and discuss the matter of instruction for tho school-children. Transport of Scholars. A communication was received from the Education Department anent the transport of scholars to schools. The department urged that wherever possible economies should be practised by shortening routes, etc. The matter was left in the chairman's hands to get a report on the routes from Tc Miro and French Pass to the school.
