PHAE LAP GOES DOWN. TO ANOTHER N.Z. HORSE. A .sensation was created at Flemmington on Saturday with the defeat of Phar Lap by another ISTew Zealand bred horse. In the C. M. Lloyd Stakes of one mile Waterline, with Sst, beat Phar lay, 9.7, by a neck. There were only three starters in the race and at the distance it looked as though Phar Lap would win once more, but Waterline responded gamely to the whip and won as stated. The winner was accorded a wonderful ovation. This was his fifth Avin in Australia and Mr S. A. Rawdon, who bought him from Sir Charles Clifford last winter for 2000 guineas is now handsomely repaid for his enterprise. Phar Lap had not been defeated since I Amouris beat him by half a head in the Warwick Stakes, one mile, last August, and in. the meantime he had won 14 races. His stake-earnings now total £51,662. Waterline is a four-year-old black gelding by The AceSailor's Hope and was ridden on Saturday by W. Duncan. - THE FEANKLIN MEETING. ROYAL DOULTON WINS HANDICAP. PUKEKOHE, .Saturday. The Franklin Racing Club's annual meeting at Pukekohc on Saturday attracted a large attendance and "under favourable weather conditions the track was in good order. The totalisator handled £22,784, com- ] ared with £31,501 last year, a decrease of £8717. This is considered very satisfactory, especially as five-shilling tickets were available for the first time, and investors made full use of this cheaper unit.
