ANOTHER SUGGESTION.

-(To the Editor)

v been away from the town for a few weeks, I am not quite certain as to what it is intended to do with regard to the Cambridge town clock, now [that the tower has been condemned by the authorities, and is to be demolished at an early date. The clock has for many years proved a valuable asset to the town, and it is unthinkable that it should not be available for public use in the future. The problem that confronts us is. where ; is it to be erected? I would like to make a suggestion that the clock be installed in a suitable clock tower, and that, this be erected on the public reserve known as the Jubilco Gardens. If the tower were erected on the central... triangular point opposite the National Hotel, it would be visible, from the greater part of the main street of the town, and would prove a great boon. Moreover, proyid-. ed the structure were of handsome and suitable design, it would be a distinct acquisition to the architecture of Cambridge. • Many local residents have seen and admired the clock tower formerly standing in High Street, Christchurch, and. recently removed from its old site and re-erected in Victoria Street. A structure somewhat similar to this, though perhaps not quite so elaborate and costly, would be most suitable for the spot referred to. The only objection that might be raised to this proposal is that of cost. "Whatever compensation is received from the Postal Department foT the removal of the present clock tower could be devoted to the new; tower, and I feel confident that in view of the acquisition such a structure would be to the town, the citizens of .Cambridge would raise whatever balance is necessary for the work. .. ' • -■?•?•' I would respectfully suggest that this is a project that the local Chamber of Commerce might interest itself in, ,and assist the Borough Council, to bring the scheme to fruition. The clock is a very valuable and serviceable one, and those who have the w elf are of Cambridge at heart would asurcdly assist in any scheme such as I have suggested above. Trusting that the matter will be taken up earnestly.—l am, etc., FRANK. PENN. Cambridge, March 9th, 1931.
