IN COLLISION

LORRY AND OAR. / ' A COURT SEQUEL. At the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., Arthur Columbus, carrier, of Cambridge (Mr H. W. King, Hamilton) claimed damages totalling £lsl 5/3 from Charles Watt, farmer, of Cambridge (Mr D. J. Lundon). The claim arose out of a collision in Lake Street on July 2 last. The plaintiff said that on the evening of the date mentioned he had called at his office and subsequently moved off towards the National Hotel, crossing on to his correct side. He saw the lights of the car travelling towards him. The car would be about 200 yards away when lie first saw it, and lie. immediately crossed to his correct side. The car came along on its wrong side, and as he anticipated a collision, he pulled up. The car was in the centre of the road when he first saw it, and then inclined to its wrong side and came straight on. He had good lights on his lorry. There was no indication of the brakes having been applied to defendant’s car. After the collision he got out and went to defendant who was still sitting in his car. Defendant said, "I’m sorry, old man, don’t make a fuss. I’ll fix everything. ’’ Cross-examined, plaintiff maintained that he first saw the car by the National Hotel, and not at the Queen-Street intersection. He denied that he had not been honest in the items of his claim'. He admitted he had reduced his original claim of £25 odd to £l7 15/3, and'then to the claim before the Court of £ls 15/3. Re-examined by his counsel, plaintiff said he was neared the kerb at the •point! of impact than afterwards. (Left Sitting).
