CATTLE IMPORTATION

NEED FOR GREAT CAUTION. POSITION OF AMERICA. WELLINGTON, March 25. The question of importation of stud cattle into New Zealand was discussed at the meeting of the Dominion executive of the Farmers' Union to-day. A Wanganui remit was passed, urging that the attention of the Government should be directed to the absurd situation of America importing cattle from the Channel Islands and passing them on to New Zealand for sale without let or hindrance and exploiting New Zealand breeders. The remit further urged that the importation of such cattle, sheep and pigs from the United States of America or Australia should be prohibited. In moving the remit, Mr J. Tockcr (Taranaki) said that they had taken

the stand that stock should not be allowed to be imported from any country which had foot and mouth disease until it could show a clean bill of health for two years. He hoped that they would stand firm on this attitude. They should take every precaution to keep the Dominion's flocks and herds clean. Now Zealand could produce better, stud cattle than could Jersey itself!

It was decided to approach, tfu? Intermediate Rural Credits Board witlTTt view to extending if possible to members of Intel-mediate Rural Credits Associations advances against wool. It was also decided to ask for Government backing to banks and firms advancing to farmers against the security of wool held for future realisation. The president, Mr W. J. Poison, said he had interviewed the chairman of the Rural Credits Board , who had given a favourable answer to the proposal. A remit was carried urging that the personnel of the New. Zealand Dairy Produce Control Board should consist of dairy producers' representatives only, and that the salaries and fees paid should be considerably reduced. A protest was made against the Government issuing bonds at a price that had so considerably Taised the rate of interest at a time when money was indispensible to the country and its production. It was decided to ask the department who was to provide funds to renew farm mortgages and at what price the- owners would be forced to pay.
