LAWN TENNIS

THE CAMBRIDGE CLUB. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. The competitions for the Cambridge Club championships—both for ladies and men —have been of exceptional interest this year. . On Saturday last several matches were played, all providing interesting tennis, while some of the matches were very keenly contested. The match between F. Swayne and J. Haworth developed into a marathon event. Both careful tactics. .Haworth won the first set, 6—4, playing accurately and carefully. At one stage it looked as though Haworth would win the next set and the match, having a good lead, but lost the opportunity, and Swayne improved his play and notched the set, 6—5. The final set was also hotly contested. It was not good tennis, but every shot was fought out, some of the rallies being of great length. Swayne eventually won the set, B—6, and thus won the game. Dr Clow and L. Haworth fought out a hard and good contest, in which there was some fine tennis. Clow took the first set, 6—2, but Haworth forced the pace and won the next, 6—5. The last set went to Clow, 6;—4. He deserved his win.

Another very close contest ensued between J. Cox and I. James, the for--ra winning, 5 —6, 6—5, 6 —3. This was a good exhibition on the whole. Cox's persistently steady play won him the match in the.end.

Miss Savage had little difficulty in defeating Miss Mary Short, 6—4, 6—2, though the loser contested the match gamely and well. Miss Savage now. meets Mrs F. Swayne in the final for-the ladies' championship. MONAVALE V. MAUNGATAUTARI. MONAVALE AGAIN WIN SMITH CUP.
