BOROUGH COUNCIL

COMMITTEES’ RECOMMENDATIONS. The following- are recommendations of the committees to be presented to the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening:— Legal and Finance Committee. Accounts: Accounts paid and to pay totalling £4696 0/6 were presented for perusal.—Recommended to the council for passing. Railway Crossing: We recommend that the Railway Department be approached for assistance towards the cost of tar-sealing the crossing from Victoria Street to Thornton Road. Compensation Claim, J. Norries (deceased): The solicitor to the Public Trust Office wrote stating that as administrator of the late Mr Norries’ estate, the Public Trustee intended to claim compensation from the council as employer, and asked if the council admitted liability.. The lettef further asked if the council -would agree to an extension of time for their claim, as the six-monthly period had almost Expired. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Care, the letter was referred to the council’s insurers, the South British Insurance Co., Ltd., the Public Trustee to be advised to this effect. Works Committee.

We resolved to recommend to the council that both sides of the bitumen surfacing opposite the Plunket rooms be tarred.

Street Cleaning: The Chamber of Commerce asked that the daily sweeping of the streets be resumed. The letter was “ received,’ ’ as we are of the opinion that sweeping is done as often as necessary.

Sewerage Scheme: Cr Care reported on the committee’s visit to Auckland where they inspected both concrete and earthenware pipes. On the motion of Cr Care, seconded by the Mayor, we recommend that the work be carried out with earthenware pipes throughout.

We recommend that tenders be called for by advertisement to close at noon on April 9th. '

We further recommend that alternative tenders be called for as follows: —

(1) Contractor to supply all material; (2) contractor to supply everything^ except pipes. s We recommend that the borough SO* lieitor be requested to have the speeilications and conditions of contract carefully perused to see that they are in order. Sanitary Contract: As the sanitary contract expires on the 31st instanf r the matter of interviewing the contractor respecting an extension of his agreement was left in the hands of the Mayor.
