In a letter to a Lyttelton friend, a member of the crew of the Aorangi, states: “We have a champion golfer on board, Hagen by name, and to see him driving practically new “Silver Kings'' over the ship's side for an hour at a time,' made one realise what a costly game golf is. The other day I w.atched him drive the contents of two paper baskets of golf balls into the sea. He. certainly can hit, though, and with apparently no effort. I have heard it rumoured that Hagen has used £7O worth of golf balls on the trip across.
