WORKS AND MAINTENANCE. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following is the engineer's (Mr T. Dix) report for the month of February, to be tabled at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening:— Maintenance: The general maintenance of the borough has been attended to and the roads kept- clear of pot-holes as possible under the present conditions. The grader has been at work on the main highways requiring' attention to try and keep them in good order. A start has been made cleaning the footpaths throughout the town, and to date quite a number at the east side of the railway line have been completed as time permitted. I beg to report that a meeting of the Works Committee was held on February 24th. Tligsg present were: Crs Moore (chairman), W. G. Care ,E. C. Wallis and C. Boyce. The committee inspected the programme drawn up and submitted by the chairman, and after a thorough inspection recommended with one or two exceptions that the programme be carried out as far as possible. A start has been made with the tarring of the paths and to-day the following have been completed:—Duke Street widening (one coat), path at Post Office, path Victoria Street, both sides Queen Street, Jubilee Gardens, around Town Hall, Lake Street (Alpha Street to Queen Street), road fronting Post Office, railway crossing Victoria Street (one coat), Thornton Road, junction with Grosvenor Street (one coat), Alpha Street, Biyce Street (Alpha Street to Duke Street). Hautapu Cemetery: The Sexton at the cemetery continues to keep the place satisfactory. , Reserves: The gardens and lawns about the town in charge of Mr Wildermoth are quite satisfactory. Baths: Favoured with perfect weather the baths are being well patronised and everything possible is done to make them attractive to the public. Gasworks: The whole of the plant at the works is working satisfactorily, and has not given any trouble of a serious nature during the month. Some alterations have been made to the plant that will be a great advantage to us during the coming year. As time permits the new bench is being got ready for use when required. The amount of gas manufactured at the works during the month of February was 486,350 cubic feet; coal carbonised 30.2 tons; average make per ton of coal 16,100 cubic feet.

Waterworks: The general maintenance of the two system is being maintained in first-class order, and has not given any trouble during the month. The extra fire plug asked for by the Fire Brigade has been installed in Victoria Square. All fire plugs and valves are cleaned and inspected to ensure them being in working order when required. Building Permits: Periodical visits are made to any buildings in course of erection, and during the month the following permits were issued: —New dwelling, £775; alterations, £SO; motor garage, £47 10/-; store, Victoria Street, £3l. Total, £903 10/-. Fees collected, £4.
