FOOTBALL

THE CAMBRIDGE UNION.

ANNUAL REPORT

The following is the annual report of the Cambridge liugby Sub-Union to be presented to the annual meeting, to be held on Thursday evening of next week: —

It is with pleasure that your executive have to again report a successful season, over the whole of the union's operations. The season opened on May 1 and continued until September 15. We were able to maintain four senior teams, six junior and five third-grade teams, which was one junior and one third-grade team more than the pre-

vious year. Representative Football.

In comparison with the previous year we wore much more successful in stn ior representative competition, our seniors winning the Finlay Cup from Matamata by 3 points to nil. We were able, as the result of sterling games by our ’reps., to held the trophy against Morrinsville and Waipa. Our seniors played eight matches, winning five, losing two, and one match was a draw. Our B team played two matches, but were unsuccessful. The junior reps, were not nearly so successful as the seniors. They played five matches, won one, lost three and one was a draw; while the third-grade reps, played four matches, won two, lost one, and one was a draw. During the season we had a visit from the Parnell B team and from the Waitemata juniors. Club Football.

There is still much room for improvement in our club football and : is to be hoped that with an earlier -stai t this year this will result. The Hautapu Club's team were'again the winners of the senior competition with 11 points. Leamington were runners-up with nine points and united and Maoris were equal with eight points. It was a better competition than the previous season, but owing to the lateness of the season and the interruption of rep. games it was most regrettable that with nine points each Leamington failed to field a team to meet Hautapu in the final of the competition. At the beginning of the season the City Club went out of existence and a new club was formed in United, the seniors doing very well. Again last season there was keen competition among the six junior teams, Kaipaki repeating their performance of the previous season in winning the competition with 17 points. Leamington and Tauwhare were run-ners-up with 12 points each; the other clubs being: Matangi 10, Hautapu nine and United four. In the,- third-grade competition the Leamington team put tip a very fine performance in winning the competition with 20 points . Of their 11 games they won nine and drew two. United wore runners-up with 13 points; the others being: High School nine, Kaipaki seven and Matangi three. It is pleasing to note that several of our seniors were chosen to re present the Waikato Union, and the executive offers them congratulations. Affiliated to the union- the Primary Schools' ■ Association again did much to foster football in the district schools and thc«school rep. team gave a fairly good account of itself in inter-district matches. The union assisted with grants of £4 for footballs and £1 10/for transport. The executive takes this opportunity of thanking the clubs' executives for the hard organisation ■’ ork done during the season to keep t' ' good old game going in this district. Financial. The balance sheet to be presented shortly shows a satisfactory state of affairs. To-day wo have a credit balance of £4B 11/4 in the Post Office account and a bank balance, of over £35, as against £2O last year and £lO the previous year. Our finances were considerably helped by the winning of the Finlay Cup. Our expenses were fairly high, but it was satisfactory that al-

though provided for it was not necessary to draw from the Post Office account the sum of £IG odd for the remodelling of the grandstand at Victoria Square, this being included in the general account expenditure. insurance Scheme. We continued with our insurance scheme again last season, and while it worked satisfactorily it was unfortunate both for the players and the union that calls on the funds were heavy. The season's operations showed a debit balance of £1 8/S, and deducted from last year’s credit of £l4 19/-, leaves a credit of £l3 10/4, making our total credit at the bank £49 6/-. Annual Ball. As usual we held our annual ball and it is gratifying to report that again it was a success, both socially and financially, the balance being a credit of about £lO. At the ball the customary presentation of trophies was made. Thanks. The executive desire to add a- word of thanks and praise to the local Referees' Association, and to the faithful and impartial service rendered district football during the season.- It is also pleasing to the union that local referees were selected to control Waikato Union matches. We trust the the referees’ numbers will be added to this year. We have also to thank the union's selectors in all grades, these gentlemen carryingout a thankless task creditably; and we must not overlook our first aid officers, Messrs A. Bcrtclsen and C. Hargreaves. They gave good service both at home and when the teams were travelling. To the gatekeepers and other honorary officials are due our grateful thanks Especially are our thanks due to all rhe players who turned out and provided the sport for the public. In extending our thanks we must not forget the Borough Council and the Leamington Town Board, also the High School Committee for the use of grounds during the season, and to the local hotelkeepers for the use of dressing conveniences; also those officials who, from time to time, placed their cars at the disposal of the union. During the season your executive held 22 meetings, and the average attendance was very good.

In conclusion the executive wish to extend to all friends and supporters best thanks for their past support; also the Press; and we ask that they will again come forward and help us make the coming Rugby season in Cambridge even, more successful than the past, j
