A preliminary official estimate of Australia’s population at December 31 last, gives a total of 6,414,385, an increase for the year of 77,599, comprising 35,825 males and 41,774 females. The natural increase, or excess of births over deaths, totalled 68,636. The average rate of increase during the 9 years from 1919 to 1928 was 2 per cent per annum. The increase of population in New Zealand last year was also small, only 18,642, which was equival-ent-to 1.27 per cent. The preceding nine years the increase averaged 2.18 per cent per annum. -
